I took the above photograph an absolute age ago it seems. The title was called ‘Flight of Angels’. I had this vision that Angels visited the town across the sea bay at night time. Seeing all these lights from the bedroom window, I thought of the ethereal and magical and moved the camera to catch all the imagery. On seeing the photograph developing in the darkroom dish? It seemed initially that Angel flight had indeed been captured. Why? Because watching a blank white piece of photograph paper, literally change from that ‘ethereal representative’ whiteness of considered angelic light it morphed into the gradually ensuing darker and darker imagery. Darkness slowly developing and the Lightness existing still to keep it at bay. Visitation of a profound nature. There. Right before my eyes.
Okay. I know you are not sitting inside my mind. But…..it was a moment I will never forget. This was not a point and shoot photograph. This was a searching for answers photograph.
Recently I’ve been thinking about hopes and deep, deep heart felt dreams and wishes. Christmas time can do that. Memories can become quite profound in one’s life at Christmas. Do our loved one’s who aren’t with us anymore exist as Angels? I sincerely want to believe so. This photograph? I’ve looked at it again after years of it’s existing as a piece of my artistic history that came to life with the help of a beautiful moment. A moment in time involving a SLR camera with some film sitting alongside, then becoming intermingled with, inherent magical internal latent imagery. Internal becoming external. Journeying with emotions and a yearning for questions answered. Then? This result of wished for imaginings and hoped for imagery.
The Angels? They fly in from a starless, moon basking beyond cloudy night sky and sweep across the houses and all the living abodes of a little town across the bay. They fly in to check on family or friendship well being, whisper words of encouragement, wisdom and warnings to ‘watch out for’. They then leave with the self promise to visit, when needed, throughout life. As they’ve always done. I, for one, will sleep soundly in the knowledge that Angels exist.
Thank you Angels. You are remembered and we thank you for remembering us.
