A confused mind exists when accessing the Files on iPad, the recordings on the Apple Mac M2 home studio set up, and emails sent from the Mac containing various stages of recordings. There is also a Crucial X6 2TB SSD external hard drive with masses of songs at various stages on it.
What happens is that you find one song can be either really muddy and lacks energy and life, whilst the same song can be bright and bushy tailed but tinny sounding in another download or….can be high energy and workable. The problem is, I never write down settings when they were at those stages. Too complicated really. So many dials and levels. Did think of photographing. But just impractical. So, there is no way to reproduce those sounds.
Over the last couple of days it has been a case of finishing off, as best my naivety can produce, in order to simply put each song to bed. I’m not a perfectionist. I just want a song to sound holistically in synergy.
Then it has the very real promise of ‘that’s it…..done and dusted’. Ready to put on the CD burning list.
But motivation is one of those elusive butterflies of love currently. Just older age not allowing that ‘once was’ ability to just keep going at high pace. But, a Summers’ spirit from the genes handed to me from troubadour relatives is a fine one to be granted in one’s lifetime. So it’s a case of changing the dynamics, but still trying to get things done. Even if it is accepting the limits of skills and realities nowadays.
And….speaking simplicity and practicality, I did add some basic one note keyboard melodies this morning on Faded Walls and Year One. On Year One, the simple keyboard part should really be replace with an electric guitar hitting elongated notes. A bit like Robert Fripp did on Bowie’s song Heroes. However, tweaking the controls gave them a bit of a kick up the backside too and I feel has energised the sound. All it took was to turn the electric guitar tracks up a notch and tweaking the Master track frequency levels. Fingers crossed when doing so. Also, I asked my bass guitar playing on Faded Walls not to be so shy and turned the volume up a bit more.
Both songs do sound a little more energised. But I would love a little gentle lead guitar lurking in there too. Weaving its dance patterns in and out. My brother is the only one who could produce something really. I can’t play stuff like that for toffee.
🎧 PrettyPlease…..the songs do sound less tinny.
Added a simple keyboard one finger notes played elongated filler on both of these songs now. Again, a lead guitar would be ideal in spots of these two songs.
Faded Walls and Year One with the bass, middle and high tweaked.
At the end of this little video is a photograph of my amplifier. On top? My late brother’s drum sticks. So it is nice that the drums and bass sound that once was in our band The XCerts (he was a superb drummer) are still in close contact.
It’s you mate, with all of its perfections and imperfections. It’s bloody good stuff. 👍🏼🤘👌 👏🏻
